Tonki
A moment to unwind in the city.
Just steps from the east exit of Komagome Station, Tonki serves up thick roast and fillet katsu encased in its signature crisp crust, all from an immaculate pale-wood counter.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Take a seat at the pale-wood counter amidst the rich aroma of frying oil, and it is easy to become absorbed in the practiced rhythm of the cooks working before you. The menu at Komagome's Tonki focuses squarely on the essentials—roast katsu, fillet katsu, and skewered kushikatsu—putting the unadorned appeal of deep-fried pork front and center.
The main draw here is the set meal, anchored by generous cuts of thick pork wrapped in the shop's idiosyncratic coating. Rather than the airy, coarse panko crust found at many tonkatsu restaurants, Tonki fries its cutlets to a deep, nutty crispness that seals in the meat's rich flavor and tender juices. Sliced both lengthwise and across into bite-sized squares, the pork pairs naturally with a dab of pungent hot mustard and a drizzle of rich, sweet tonkatsu sauce, releasing deeper savor with every chew.
The supporting elements of the teishoku set are just as thoughtfully considered. Finely shredded, crunchy cabbage and freshly steamed white rice are available for refills, while a hearty miso soup and a small dish of house pickles keep the palate refreshed between bites. For those settling into the counter rhythm, ordering a beer or chilled sake alongside nibbles such as shiokara (salted squid), chilled tofu, or a plate of assorted pickles makes waiting for the freshly fried pork an enjoyable ritual in its own right.
With an all-counter layout that extends deep into the tidy dining room, the atmosphere is calm and comfortable for anyone dining solo. Payment is cash only, so make sure to have yen notes on hand before pulling up a stool to enjoy a piping-hot cutlet.
